Hemp for our four-legged friends

Hemp for our four-legged friends

In recent years, CBD oil has become the keystone therapy for our dogs. Providing relief from pain, to anxiety, to seizures, and much more. CBD lends a plethora of benefits for your furry friend, and can greatly improve holistic wellness and overall quality of life.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound found in cannabis and hemp. Dr. Klein (of the American Kennel Club) says it is essential to note that, in most cases, CBD oil does not contain delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

In fact, most CBD products are derived from hemp and not marijuana, so they won’t have that psychoactive “high” effect of THC.

Early studies

McGrath, one of the pioneering researchers in the field of veterinary cannabis, began studying CBD in 2016, and in one of his first papers, he analyzed how three different methods of intake (capsule, oil, or cream) affected how CBD passed through the bodies of healthy dogs along with its effects.

McGrath found that the oil had the best pharmacokinetic profile, meaning that it had reached the highest concentration in the blood and remained in the bloodstream the longest. The capsule was absorbed discreetly while the cream less so.

These results align with what we know so far about CBD absorption in humans: in fact, in animals as in humans, CBD is metabolized by the liver.

CBD products for animals are therefore available in many of the same forms we find for humans, including edibles (treats or capsules), oils (which can be added to food or placed under the tongue), or topical creams and balms (rubbed directly onto the skin). Let’s look at them in more detail.

CBD oil allows for more precise dosing and faster reaction time. It acts more like an oil-based supplement rather than a recreational product.

Topical hemp infusions are a traditional remedy for individuals and animals suffering from body aches and pains. They are applied directly to the skin, offering immediate localized relief. For external use only, they are absorbed into the skin to treat allergic reactions, joint pain, muscle pain or general inflammation.

CBD dog treats are another alternative and offer them an easy to swallow and enjoyable snack. With all the delicious flavor combinations available, your pet won’t be able to tell the difference between this product and an ordinary treat.

Why give CBD to my dog or cat?

To put it simply, the benefits. Due to the fact that CBD has the ability to directly influence the endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for regulating various physiological effects in the body, the potential for CBD to benefit humans, as well as our pets, is enormous.

Therefore, products made from the hemp plant can provide several benefits to dogs of all breeds and sizes. Here are just a few reasons why you may want to supplement their diet with such products.

It can provide pain relief for dogs suffering from arthritis. According to a 2020 study on antioxidants, CBD oils may offer anti-inflammatory effects. Although they have not been tested much in dogs, CBD helps in the treatment of arthritis and similar conditions that cause pain.

It can reduce a dog’s anxiety. Cannabidiol is well known for its calming effects, which is why it is used by people who suffer from the condition.

Dogs can also experience anxiety, perhaps due to separation (even if momentary), fear of loud noises, or nervousness during a trip. Some pet owners anecdotally report that CBD oil has improved their pet’s anxiety symptoms.

However, these effects have only been seen in dogs also taking more traditional prescription drugs to treat seizures.

At what time of the day?

After getting some exercise in or out of the house, high energy levels can remain in the animal. It is a good idea to give them a good amount of CBD to help relieve joint pain in the case of older animals or calm the nerves of over-excitable dogs, thus bringing them back to “inner mode”.

When training a pet, the best system is the “reward” system. Fortunately, because of the inherent benefits of CBD oil and an appreciable taste, the ‘pet will be willing to do anything for a few drops of the bacon tinctures.

If there is one thing that is true about dogs and especially cats, it is that they hate baths. To get your pet ready for a bath, you can give them a small dose first to get them better prepared and later as a reward.

Not all pets are properly relaxed when we, the owners, are sleepy and want to go to sleep. It might therefore be helpful, both for us and for them, to take advantage of some CBD drops in such situations.

Obviously, our pets are part of the family and should be treated with care and attention. We always suggest consulting your veterinarian before supplementing their diet with CBD products, especially in case of pre-existing treatments, and always choose certified and quality products.
